Cost of Firing Services for Ceramics and Pottery at Marin Pottery

What is Firing at Marin Pottery:

Firing is a service and is required for usable ceramic work. The cost of firing fees is based upon the required temperature for the type of clay used, the size, shape, and complexity of the ceramic or pottery piece to be fired while keeping safe distances between each piece. Fees cover the cost of labor to load and unload the kilns, the commercial cost of electricity, and kiln maintenance.

Marin Pottery has supplied a simple pricing chart to incorporate all of these factors. Minimum turnaround time for firing your wares is one week from the date on your firing ticket. Firing is always dependent on the quantity of items to be fired for either bisque or glaze kilns and size of your work, sometimes we are able to slip a small piece in when trying to fill a kiln.

How long does it take to fire a piece:

The firing cycle for a bisque is 10-12 hours of heating time 1800-2250˚ F followed by a 12 to 36 hour cooling period.

When will my items get fired?

First-in / first-out is not always possible. Loading a kiln to create a maximum load is a true work of art. Some small items may get into the kiln easier due to their size, while larger items take a specific space in the kiln being mindful of placement, height, and surrounding work.

How long can I leave my work on the “to be picked up” shelf?

You may leave work for a maximum of two weeks. After two week your work will be donated due to our small boutique studio and lack of extra space.

A little about what we are able to fire:

We take no risks with our kilns and other artists' work. We can not fire combustible materials (clays infused or embedded with paper), lead-bearing glazes, wares we deem as wet, or wax. Firing risk still remains in handling fragile wares, exposure to other wares in the kiln and catastrophic kiln failures, these unfortunate circumstances are out of our hands.

What Marin Pottery requires for work to be fired:

A filled out firing ticket, filling in all required fields.

The very bottom of bisque and Cone 5-6 glaze items must be 100% glaze free (this includes Stroke and Coat, but Amaco or engobes are able to be on bottom) and there must be at least ½ " margin at the bottom edge to prevent problems such as glaze melting and fusing the item to the kiln shelf. If you are aware you are using a glaze that drips and it does get on our kiln shelves you are responsible for replacing what is damaged. If your item needs to be stilted or placed on a cookie you need to supply these items. If your piece adheres to our kiln shelf you are responsible for replacing. While our kiln shelves are coated with kiln wash to protect against minor drips and runs, the responsibility for wares becoming one with the shelf or damage to the kiln interior is the responsibility of the potter.

Quantity of ware:

We reserve the right to refuse quantities of wares that would overload our firing operations or cause severe disruption to other potters. If you have enough wares to fill ½ of a kiln or a full kiln reach out and we can let you know when our kilns are available.

Guarantee:

There are none.  Firing is a risk, risk of exposure to other wares in the kiln, risk of structural defects in your preparation which may be exposed by heat.  Risks from handling or catastrophic kiln failures.

Equipment:

Two KN1227 electric kilns

Limitations and Exceptions:

We reserve the right to refuse an item based on what may appear to be an unacceptable risk of causing damage to our kiln, other potters' ware or that the item contains a product which is considered a health hazard.
